What is Myopia?

Myopia, or near-sightedness, is a condition in which the eyeball elongates, resulting in blurred distance vision as light focuses in front of the retina instead of on the retina. Myopia is becoming a global concern as more children are developing myopia and also higher levels of myopia.

What Causes Myopia?

Predominantly, myopia can be caused by various genetic and environmental factors. A child with one or two myopic parents is more likely to be myopic. Children who spend more time indoors reading and on handheld devices are also more likely to develop myopia. Combining these factors adds greater risk of developing myopia.

Why does it matter?

Having myopia can make performing daily activities more difficult. It can also increase the risk of developing serious ocular diseases later in life including:
  • Cataracts
  • Glaucoma
  • Retinal Detachment
  • Myopic Maculopathy
Previously, the only way to correct myopia was through the use of eyeglasses and/or contact lenses. Neither of these corrections do anything to slow the progression of myopia, however, leading to continued eyeball elongation and worsening of myopia each and every year.

Brilliant Futures Myopia Management Program

With the Brilliant Futures Myopia Management Program, a solution exists to correct your child's vision and slow the progression of their myopia. Brilliant Futures is a treatment program that uses the MiSight 1day contact lens, the first and only contact lens FDA-approved to slow the progression of myopia in children age 8-12 at initiation of treatment. Dr. Rebarchik is a certified provider of the Brilliant Futures Myopia Management Program.

MiSight 1day contact lenses use dual focus optics to create alternating vision correction and treatment zones, providing clear central vision and peripheral myopic defocus necessary to slow eyeball elongation simultaneously.
